Development – By September 2018, Marvel Studios was developing multiple series for its parent company Disney’s streaming service, Disney+ ; Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige was slated to take a “hands-on role” in each series’ development, focusing on “handling” the actors who would be reprising their roles from the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) films.
Among these was a Disney+ animated series based on the Marvel Comics comic What If.? The anthology series, which would be produced by Feige, would examine how the MCU might vary if key events had transpired differently, such as if Loki had possessed Thor’s hammer Mjolnir. It was hoped that the actors that depict the characters in the MCU movie would also provide their voices to the series.
Jonathan Schwartz, a Marvel Studios executive, offered A.C. Bradley as head writer for the series following Bradley’s unsuccessful pitch as a writer for Captain Marvel (2019): 1 Bradley, a fan of the Marvel brand, was anxious to pen a Marvel film and saw What If.? as her opportunity to create several Marvel tales.
She joined the project in October 2018 after Marvel Studios was impressed by the fact that some of Bradley’s ideas for the series mirrored elements they were exploring for films. Bryan Andrews, a storyboard artist for many of the main action scenes in the MCU films, spoke with Brad Winderbaum, the executive in charge of the series at Marvel Studios, to discuss directing the series as early as 2018.
Bradley and Andrews’ roles were officially revealed in August of 2019. Disney and Marvel officially confirmed the series in April 2019. Marvel Studios had previously considered adapting the What If.? comics, but opted to wait until the completion of the Infinity Saga in order to have enough plots to develop other versions of.
Creating an animated series allows the company to explore all of these concepts “unboundedly.” What If.? explores aspects of the multiverse in a way that Winderbaum believed made the series as significant as any other MCU property; Bradley confirmed that all episodes of the series are canon to the MCU multiverse, with the majority of episodes taking place in their own universe.
Bradley was uncertain as to how Loki and Doctor Strange in the Universe of Madness (2022) would explore and explain the MCU version of the multiverse, as work on What If. began prior to their production. She opted to focus on the possibilities inside the different timelines of the multiverse, which she characterized as a “sampler of varied chocolates,” and left the explanation of aspects such as the Time Variance Authority to those other initiatives.
Feige and Winderbaum kept the creative teams of Loki and Multiverse of Madness apprised of the status of What If.? as they began work on their respective projects. The What If.? creative team met with Loki executive producers Stephen Broussard and Kevin Wright and WandaVision (2021) co-executive producer Mary Livanos to construct a “rule book” for the universe, its branch timelines, and nexus events.
Winderbaum, Feige, Louis D’Esposito, Victoria Alonso, Andrews, and Bradley serve as executive producers for the series, while Carrie Wassenaar serves as a producer. The length of each episode is roughly 30 minutes. In December 2019, Feige stated that the first season will consist of 10 episodes and that production on a second 10-episode season had already begun.
- However, due to production delays caused by the COVID-19 pandemic, the tenth episode of the first season could not be finished on time and was shifted to the second season; the second season was likewise shortened to nine episodes.
- Bradley claimed that the second season was her last assignment with Marvel Studios in July of 2022, when work on the third season began.
During Marvel Studios’ animation panel at the 2022 San Diego Comic-Con, What If.? and the other mentioned projects were shown as part of the “Marvel Animated Multiverse.”
