Luca is an American computer-animated coming-of-age fantasy film released by Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures in 2021. The film was directed by Enrico Casarosa, produced by Andrea Warren, and written by Jesse Andrews and Mike Jones, based on a screenplay written by Casarosa, Andrews, and Simon Stephenson.

  • Jacob Tremblay and Jack Dylan Grazer provide their voices, with Emma Berman, Saverio Raimondo, Marco Barricelli, Maya Rudolph, Jim Gaffigan, Peter Sohn, Lorenzo Crisci, Marina Massironi, and Sandy Martin in supporting roles.
  • It is Casarosa’s first feature-length film and second film overall, following the 2011 short La Luna.

The film focuses on Luca Paguro, a small sea monster child with the capacity to assume human shape on land, as he explores the village of Portorosso with his new best friends, Alberto Scorfano and Giulia Marcovaldo, having a summer adventure that changes his life.

  1. However, they have little option when it threatens his genuine identity’s secrecy.
  2. Luca is influenced by Casarosa’s youth in Genoa; many Pixar artists were dispatched to the Italian Riviera to conduct study on Italian culture and surroundings.
  3. The sea monsters were largely inspired by ancient Italian regional tales and folklore.

The concept and animation were influenced by hand-drawn and stop-motion works and Hayao Miyazaki’s aesthetic, similar to La Luna. Casarosa described the outcome as a picture that “honors Federico Fellini and other famous Italian filmmakers, with a dash of Hayao Miyazaki thrown in for good measure.” Dan Romer wrote the score for the picture.

Luca debuted in the Aquarium of Genoa on June 13, 2021, and its theatrical release in the United States was originally scheduled for June 18, 2021. In response to the continuing COVID-19 outbreak, the film was distributed on Disney+ via direct-to-streaming. It also had a simultaneous one-week theatrical engagement at the El Capitan Theatre in Hollywood from June 18 to June 24, 2021.

In nations lacking a streaming service, it was distributed theatrically. The majority of critics praised the film’s aesthetics, voice acting, and nostalgic atmosphere. It was also the most-watched streaming film of 2021, with over 10.6 billion minutes of viewing time.
(The competition consists of three legs: swimming, cycling, and pasta eating. Viva l’Italia!) Ercole (Saverio Raimondo), a preening bully with two vicious sidekicks, threatens Luca and Alberto with humiliation and, even worse, exposure to the harpoons of the sea-monster-hating townspeople.

Alberto feels envious of Luca’s rising attraction to Giulia and the universe of humanity she represents. However, the film is too preoccupied with its several narratives and too enamored by its summery, tourism atmosphere to dwell on negative emotions or bleak prospects. It is about the occasionally perilous finding of pleasure, and it is a delight to discover.

Luca Rating: PG Harpoons and wounded emotions. Review of ‘Luca’: Calamari by Your Name (duration: 1 hour 35 minutes) (Published 2021)
