Is Disney Raya a boy or girl?
Raya and the Last Dragon is Disney’s most authentic and nuanced portrayal of’strong’ women to date. There is no single acceptable way to be a woman. This is especially true in the most recent Disney picture,. Tran portrays Raya, a warrior and explorer who seeks to restore life to the magical land of Kumandra, in the long-awaited animated film with a spectacular ensemble of A-list performers, including,,,,,,, and to mention a few.
This article contains light Raya and the Last Dragon spoilers. Tran told SYFY WIRE during a virtual press conference preceding the film’s March 5 release, “There were a lot of talks in the beginning about trying to make sure that this was a character we had never seen before.” She notes that one objective was to question the audience’s conceptions of a “princess” and a “hero.” Raya is a girl, a lady, a princess, a warrior, a hero, a daughter, a friend, and many other things.
“This is a really unique sort of hero, and this is a very unique type of princess,” Tran affirms. In several of Disney’s recent works, characters’ gender, ethnicity, or sexual orientation have not been a hindrance. Young women can be rulers (Frozen, Tangled), explorers (Moana, Tangled, Zootopia), and businesswomen (Frozen, Tangled, Zootopia) ( The Princess and the Frog ).
Typically, though, these films have few female characters, rarely employ archetypes to provide genuine depth, and nearly always include a romantic interest. The same cannot be true for the female characters in Raya and the Last Dragon. Raya is not the only unique sort of hero in the film, nor is she the only unique form of princess.
In contrast to Raya, the future monarch of the Kumandran realm of Heart, Chan’s Namaari, the future ruler of the Fang land, is the antagonist. They were not always this way, though. As youngsters at the beginning of the film, Raya and Namaari form a connection through their common admiration for the extinct dragons that once flew above Kumandra.
- Who hasn’t had that adolescent experience when talking about an obscure band you both adore is enough to become lifelong friends?” Osnat Shurer, producer, told SYFY WIRE.
- The girls are from vastly different worlds and have vastly different parents, yet that does not preclude them from finding common ground.
Without giving away any surprises, Namaari and Raya’s connection evolves into adulthood, although with a substantially altered bite. The women develop a profound dislike for one another, and they eventually become full-fledged adversaries. Even though Namaari plays the “evil” role, her experiences, decisions, and emotions are not one-dimensional.
- Namaari began as a much more straightforward antagonist,” admits co-author Qui Nguyen.
- However, we were always challenged: How can we make it more profound? How can we make the relationship between Raya and Namaari relevant to the larger tale we’re attempting to tell? Because of this, we gave them a complicated past.
And it refers to the other aspect of many complex female relationships: a person with whom you shared a love and a history. They were both raised to be leaders and now consider one another as adversaries. “However, they are also interested and attracted to one another,” she teases.
Another female character to whom Raya is inexorably attracted? Sisu, Awkwafa’s titular “Lost Dragon.” Raya inadvertently resurrects Sisu while attempting to unite her fractured universe. Raya, a self-proclaimed dragon enthusiast, believes that Sisu can save mankind in the same way that the dragon and her brothers did 500 years ago.
Sisu, however, differs from what Raya anticipated. There are no honorable, very strong animals here. Sisu is a wiseacre, the middle sibling of her dragon family, and, according to her description, the student who did not contribute to the class project yet had no difficulty taking credit for it.
Raya has always lacked a gentle heart, faith in, and love for humans, despite her humor and dragon abilities. Even though Raya, Namaari, and Sisu are not the only or even the only female characters in the film, they represent a range. Each of these individuals is tough, motivated, emotional, devoted, shattered, and seeking connection in his or her own way.
They are the protagonists and leaders of their own narratives. And their connections are the key to rescuing the planet and the core of the narrative. “The more we dug into it, the more we were able to look at each other and say, ‘Wow, there’s not much of a precedent for this,'” says Shurer of these kind of female friendships in cinema.
- However, we have strong friends and come from long lineages of strong women, and the fact that we got to see ourselves on TV was a major factor.
- Consider things from your own perspective.” “At no time in the film is the fact that they are women held against them or viewed as an impediment to be surmounted,” Nguyen says.
“They are independent, fully developed characters. They have their own travels, personal arcs, and tasks to complete, none of which are related to the fact that they are women. Our characters are female. That is a part of who they are, but it is not their essence or distinguishing characteristic.” This Friday, March 5, Raya and the Last Dragon premieres in cinemas and on Disney+ with exclusive access.
