20th Season – Ariel – Katy’s outfit for season 20 was among her most outlandish. She was costumed like Ariel from The Little Mermaid, replete with a seafoam green fin and a plastic wig resembling Ariel’s flowing red hair. She carried a fork, or a ” dinglehopper,” as Ariel would describe it.
Due to Katy’s mermaid tail, fellow judges Lionel Richie and Luke Bryan had to wheel her onto the stage on a dolly. When she reached her seat, host Ryan Seacrest began speaking, but there was an abrupt loud crash. Thankfully, Katy was not hurt when her chair flipped over and she fell backwards in it. However, it was one of the night’s most amusing moments.
Later, Katy remained in character and appeared to be a fearful Ariel as Nicolina played “Poor Unfortunate Souls,” the hallmark song of the wicked Ursula. Audiences were treated to some of the finest performances in the history of American Idol on Disney Night.
Fans have been charmed by Katy’s custom of donning Disney costumes for the previous five years. Katy transforms the American Idol stage into the happiest place on earth, regardless of the part she performs.
