Does DisneyQuest remain open?
DisneyQuest opened for the first time on June 19, 1998, as part of a major expansion of the Downtown Disney entertainment district (now Disney Springs) at Downtown Disney West Side, and was intended to be the first of a larger chain of similar facilities.
- On June 16, 1999, the first DisneyQuest outside of a resort opened in Chicago, with plans for additional locations worldwide.
- The Chicago location was in the North Bridge development, where ESPN Zone, another Disney Regional chain, opened approximately one month later.
- On December 9, 1998, Disney Regional announced Philadelphia as its new location as a tenant of the Pavilion at Market East project developed by Goldenberg Group in the former Gimbels Department Store location.
The Chicago location ceased operations permanently on September 4, 2001, after two years and three months of operation, due to low visitor numbers and broader issues. Although the location was generating revenue, it was insufficient for Disney. Following the failure of DisneyQuest Chicago, the DisneyQuest project was terminated.
- A construction project that had begun in Philadelphia was abandoned, leaving a massive hole in its place for several years; the hole has since been filled in, and the area has since been converted into a parking lot.
- A DisneyQuest attraction was never built at the Disneyland Resort in California.
- Disney announced plans to build a second location in downtown Toronto, but the project was canceled.
Disney Regional Entertainment handed over control of the remaining location to Walt Disney World operations following the closure of the Chicago location. Disney officials announced on June 30, 2015 that the Walt Disney World location would close in 2016 as part of the ongoing transformation of Downtown Disney into Disney Springs.
- A representative for the labor unions that represent Disney employees at DisneyQuest stated that displaced workers will be relocated to other positions.
- The property was planned to be redeveloped into a new NBA-themed attraction after the NBA left its previous location at Universal CityWalk.
- Disney officials announced in November 2016 that DisneyQuest would remain open for the remainder of 2016 and into 2017 with no specific closing date.
They added that they had no new information regarding the status of the NBA attraction other than the fact that it was still planned for the site. The Disney Parks announced on January 30, 2017 that DisneyQuest would close after July 2, 2017 so that construction on the NBA Experience attraction could commence.
