Description – The parade marches down Main Street, United States of America. It features Mickey Mouse, Minnie Mouse, Goofy, Donald Duck, Daisy Duck, Pluto, Scrooge McDuck, and Chip ‘n Dale, as well as floats featuring celebrities, musical performances, marching bands from various schools and communities across the United States, and highlights of events and properties at Disney theme parks and other Disney productions, in addition to those of the other components of the Walt Disney group (like Star WARS).
Like the Macy’s Parade, it concludes with the arrival of Santa Claus, and one of the most anticipated features each year is the appearance of Walt Disney’s Babes in Toyland soldiers from the 1961 film. Currently, the majority of the program is recorded in November (or, in the 2000s, until early December) for Christmas Day broadcast.
However, until the early 1990s, the parade was broadcast live on Christmas Day on CBS, with whom Disney also celebrated Thanksgiving and New Year’s. After Disney’s acquisition of the station in 1996, the program moved to ABC. The parade continued to be broadcast live on ABC on Christmas Day, with a second show recorded two days prior for international use and/or as a backup in the event of inclement weather.
The recorded segments of the parade show feature highlights of the Walt Disney Company’s activities, such as motion pictures, television, home entertainment and streaming, music, cruises, world tours, and the newest attractions and resort hotels scheduled for future debuts in its various resort locations in the United States and abroad.
In the weeks leading up to the parade, the Disney/ABC family of networks began airing companion specials in 2016. The Wonderful World of Disney: Magical Holiday Celebration and Disney Parks Descendants Magical Holiday Celebration aired on ABC and Disney Channel, respectively, on November 24 and November 25 of that year, featuring many of the same characters as the Christmas parade and tying into the Descendants TV-movie franchise.
- Some segments and performances in the Christmas parade that year were even recycled from the two previous specials.
- The following year, Freeform announced that not only would they air the second Magical Holiday Celebration after its initial airing on ABC, but they would also premiere a new hour-long special titled Decorating Disney: Holiday Magic that goes behind the scenes of the Disney parks’ holiday celebrations.
This action coincides with the expansion of the channel’s popular 25 Days of Christmas event to a number of other Disney-owned networks. The 2017 holiday season also saw the return of the Disney Channel special from the parks, now titled Disney Parks Presents a Disney Channel Holiday Celebration.
Commencing with the 2017 parade, the prerecorded holiday greetings that air during the broadcast were created not only by talents from Walt Disney Pictures, the Disney Channel, and the online streaming service Disney+, but also from the ABC Network, Marvel Studios, Lucasfilm, the Muppets, and other entities owned and operated by The Walt Disney Company.
It has been a tradition since 2002 for the parade to begin with a message from the CEO of Walt Disney welcoming television viewers to the broadcast. American Forces Network has broadcasted the special. Telemundo has broadcast Spanish-language versions of the special titled Desfile de Navidad Disney, (Feliz) Navidad Disney, and Navidad Mágica Disney, which typically feature Latin musicians.

Is Disney’s Christmas parade live-action?
The official Christmas Day Disney Parks Parade is not shot live, as few people are aware. It is actually pre-recorded from earlier in the year. If you wish to attend the taping, this article will provide the necessary details. 1 Contact the Disney Parks Corporation to learn when the Christmas Day Parade will be recorded. Ensure that you do not call (to either park) any earlier than October 1st. For Walt Disney World guests, dial (407) 939-5277; for Disneyland (CA), dial 1- (714) 781-INFO; or contact the respective park via the web form located on the Walt Disney World website or the Disneyland website.
- Plan to visit the Disney Parks (especially the Magic Kingdom) between the first Friday of November (for Disneyland audiences) and the first two weekends of November (in 2018) for the Magic Kingdom at Walt Disney World.
- Ensure that Disneyland and Walt Disney World employees do not convince you that this parade is the same as the nighttime and afternoon parades that air daily on the same parade route.
- 2 Recognize that the parade will likely run down Main Street USA in both parks, so be mindful so you don’t have to fight the crowds for a prime bench location near the parade.
- 3 Be prepared for a lengthy wait as you contribute to the ambiance of the recording. It may take up to two and a half to three hours to tape this program, as they will allot time for a “dry run” followed by the recording of just the audio track and then the video track of the activities.
- 4 Recognize that both events consist of two components. The stage performance is sometimes taped before the parade, which is spread out over multiple attempts and retakes and cannot be shorter than two hours by itself.
- 5 Act as if it were a live broadcast on Christmas Eve. Follow the flow. Don a red Santa hat (with or without a bell). However, ensure that you appear casual and that the rest of your attire does not set you apart from the other park visitors.
- The only other fee is the park entrance fee, which you should have considered prior to entering the park on that day.
- 7 Position yourself in the crowd so that your voice will be “heard” as one of the many people who will act and respond to what the on-stage producers or parade organizers want parade viewers to do.

- Try to bring your own camcorder to record the events yourself. It will seem like a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity that you will not want to miss. However, if you do so, be sure to bring multiple spare batteries for your camcorder, as recording both parts will be extremely time-consuming and battery-intensive. - Few young children and toddlers can sit in a stroller for an extended period of time while watching the parade and events pass by (even kids younger than 4 years of age will tend to doze off to sleep in about 15 to 20 minutes out of pure boredom). But people with strollers receive no special consideration, regardless of whether this is a once-in-a-lifetime event or a daily occurrence (which it is not)!
