Is Disney’s Dinosaurs a show?
The relationship between Dinosaurs and Jim Henson, who had passed away the previous year, was noted in news articles published around the time of the show’s debut. According to a New York Times story, Henson conceptualized the program in 1988 and intended for it to be a sitcom about a family of dinosaurs.
According to Alex Rockwell, vice president of the Henson group, “many felt it was a ridiculous notion” prior to the popularity of The Simpsons. In the late 1980s, Henson collaborated with fantasy artist, illustrator, and designer William Stout on a film starring animatronic dinosaurs with the working title The Natural History Project ; according to a 1993 article in The New Yorker, Henson worked on a dinosaur project (presumably the Dinosaurs concept) until the “last months of his life.” The television division of The Walt Disney Company began developing on the series for CBS in 1990, before ABC, which Disney subsequently purchased, picked it up.
Rafael Montemayor Aguilar of Vulture noted that the program “was a smash” upon its premiere, and Michael Jacobs indicated that this was the reason why the network did not significantly interfere with the production. Aguiton claimed that the switch to new time slots on the network negatively affected the show’s ratings.
